About FEMROM

FEMROM stands for “Equality through difference: Roma women’s access on labor market”. The title highlights the key terms of the project. It makes us focus on the relation between Roma woman and work. Unpaid work and/or income generating labor is one of the dimensions through which Roma women take their part in sustaining their families and communities in particular and the society in a more general manner. The project acknowledges the active involvement of Roma women in productive roles and the social mechanisms (among them exclusion and discrimination) and cultural perceptions (among them racial and gender prejudices) that prescribe certain positions for Roma women (among which accessible jobs) and limit their opportunities in self-realization in private and public life (but also on labor market). On the one hand, using the methods and techniques of interdisciplinary social and cultural research, the project aims at gaining knowledge and deeper insight into these phenomena. On the other hand, through multi-directed activities, the project acts on the conditions and factors that shape the opportunities and real chances of Roma women to get paid jobs that could provide them safety and well-being, and respect from the Roma and non-Roma communities.
