Activities and results The activities of the project take place on local, multi-regional, national and transnational level. Some of our activities are informative (we offer information services for Roma communities, but also information that raise sensitivity regarding problems encountered by Roma women in the labor market and work environments). Other activities are formative: their aim is to have a direct impact on the target-groups we work with, and on the degree to which ethnic and gender discrimination is acknowledged in our society. In addition, we would like to emphasize the importance of eliminating or reducing the impact of discrimination. The project combines research activities with social intervention or development, recognizing the fact that social change cannot be effective and does not serve the interests of the targeted people unless it is based on the assessment of their needs and problems, and considers the way they themselves understand and would like to solve these problems. Our activities stem from a vision, a perspective on the causes of gender, ethnic and age-based inequalities, causes that taken together act on several dimensions that transform differences in inequalities, and/or create conditions that confine equality to assimilation. We know that self-fulfillment depends also on where someone starts his/her life (which is extremely different and unequal not just because of material conditions of one’s life but also due to concepts and cultural norms that shape their destinies). Therefore we consider that we need to act in such a way in which our interventions produce equality. We cannot achieve this goal if we do not recognize that the situation of Roma women is different from both the condition of non-Roma women and Roma man. To secure them equal access to resources (for example paid and socially valued and recognized jobs) we need affirmative actions to counterbalance disadvantages they start with. For example, we need projects, such as ours that recognizes their problems and serves their interests. We need projects that act towards changing stereotypes usually held against them but also projects that aim at effectively creating chances for them on the job market (for example, through training courses, information campaigns, counseling and mediation between them and their employers, accompanying their children) and generally for having access to resources that warrant safety and stability for them and their families. |
