The relevance of the project for the target groups

The needs of the target groups involved in the project are identified by the means of social research (sociological survey, ethnographic/anthropological case studies, focus group) carried out on multi-regional scale. On the other hand, collecting data on professional qualification, training programs and job opportunities, and the analysis of the labor market (on regional level) generate data that facilitate the mediation between the identified needs of Roma women and young persons, and the training program managers and employers. From our previous experience we can state that Roma women’s (our main target group) access on the labor market is limited by many factors such as: lack of or scarce formal education; lack of identity papers; limited information on skill enhancement, training programs; family constraints and traditional norms regarding women’s and gender roles; lack of self-confidence and esteem cultivated also by Roma women through interiorizing devalued perceptions of themselves; the difficulties in reconciling family and work due among others to the lack of accessible social services of caring of dependent family members; the attitude of employers to Roma in general and to Roma women in special, attitudes based on prejudices, and the discriminatory practices that stem from them; lack of information regarding legislation on equal opportunities and non-discrimination both in the case of Roma women and the case of employers; negative image of Roma circulated in the mass-media, which discourages employers to hire Roma people; unequal treatment of Roma in public administration units and schools with implications for their relation with authorities and for their real chance to be hired. We may observe further that even young Roma people with higher education confront prejudices and discriminatory practices on the labor market, so that they cannot find a job according to their qualifications and they face long term unemployment. Our project is relevant for the needs of Roma women and young people because it acts on several levels and on several factors that produce and maintain social exclusion, and creates conditions for their employment. Regarding the other target groups (representatives of mass media, public administration, civil society, schools, employers/companies), by the means of focus groups we will identify their attitudes, mentalities, and knowledge regarding equal opportunities, non-discrimination, Roma communities, particularly community norms referring to women. Formative sessions/trainings on three subjects (offered in four regions) will provide opportunities for them to get familiar with this knowledge. Thus, our project contributes to the realization of a cohesive and inclusive society that invests in human capital. The project responds to the need of establishing and consolidating transnational relations between Roma women from Europe. In these terms our target groups are those that militate for the promotion of women and the recognition of their rights both in their communities and in the majority society. The relevance of our project in this respect consists in the creation and maintenance of a public space (an annual journal in English, Romanian and Romani) which makes them visible and capacitate them through the power of the transnational network.
